Listening is hard work. Listening to those with whom you disagree is really hard work.

One of the great dangers of our time is the way we arrange our lives to interact with those with whom we already agree. We often hear about this problem on social media, but the danger is much deeper than that. For decades now, Americans have been sorting themselves into neighborhoods, newsfeeds and churches that reinforce already held beliefs. As a result, we no longer need to rub shoulders with those who see the world differently. We do not need to listen to those with whom we disagree or those whose life experience is vastly different than our own. Instead, we rely on tired mis-characterizations that ensure we learn nothing: “He’s a close-minded bigot.” “She is just a snowflake.”
