July 26, 2018 – Europeon Patent Office –

António Campinos heads he Europeon Patent Office.  In this article he shares how he has intentionally set up listening sessions throughout the organization.  He states, “So, in nearly a hundred individual coffee meetings in Munich and The Hague – no, I didn’t have coffee every time! – I was able to gather honest and direct feedback from our employees to feed into a strategic plan. Immediately it became apparent how valuable the exercise would be. I was struck by the sheer depth and breadth of talent here, the various different professional and cultural backgrounds, and a profound engagement with the work.

I appreciate a leader who understands the power that listening brings to an organization.  It is not just about setting up listening sessions.  The key is the meaningful action that is being taken afterwards from the collective voice.
